Comprehensive River Ice Simulation System Project (CRISSP)

CRISSP – Detailed View

Hydroelectric power generating facilities, as well as other hydraulic engineering projects in cold regions are often adversely affected by ice problems in the winter. A better knowledge of ice conditions allows hydroelectric owners greater profitability while helping to ensure public safety during the winter months. Availability of methods for monitoring and predicting ice conditions can aid in the design and operation of hydropower generating plants and other hydraulic structures.

The most economical and efficient method of analyzing river ice regimes is the use of computer models to simulate the complex relationships between hydraulic, meteorological, and thermal-ice conditions. CEATI International Inc. is currently finalizing the development of an ice simulation software program designed to enhance the capability of the hydroelectric power industry in dealing with problems brought about by ice conditions. The program will also provide quantitative predictions of these conditions for environmental and engineering analyses associated with the development and operation of other hydraulic engineering projects such as flood control and inland navigation structures.
