State of the Art Report on Spacer Dampers
|
|
It is important to reduce the effects of vibration on overhead lines, as they affect conductor life and can cause damage to conductors and hardware. Spacers or spacer dampers are used to control the vibration effects on bundle conductors. At the present time, there are no standard specifications widely reconized by the industry for the selection and application of spacer dampers. Various utilities have developed their own specifications and rules for designing and locating spacer dampers to reduce the negative effects of vibration to a safe level. This state of the art report discusses the salient features of the various types of the spacers and spacer dampers that are commercially available a this time to control vibration induced damage of the bundle conductor lines. A survey was conducted to find the present specifications and installation practices for spacer damper/spacers. The methodology used to collect information from the utilities, consultants and manufacturers, is described. The questionnaire, and list of respondents are also included. The survey results are summarised. Information obtained through a literature search and highlights of pertinent papers are presented. The mechanisms of vibration, mathematical modelling and critical parameters as related to spacers and spacer dampers is included in this report for reference. Conclusions and recommendations for the development of a standard for spacer dampers/spacers are made.
