Title
Customer Power Factor Correction Capacitor Application Guide
Abstract
The objective of this project was to develop an application guide that provides design and application procedures for power factor correction within customer facilities. The guide presents technical and economic issues associated with power factor correction and illustrates some frequently encountered power quality and operational problems.

The application of power factor correction capacitors increases system capacity and reduces system losses. Generally for industrial customers, power factor correction capacitors can be a very economical means to reduce demand charges. Despite these benefits, a number of power quality issues should be evaluated when capacitors are applied, including harmonic problems associated with resonance conditions and transient voltages during capacitor switching.

The guide includes an introductory section that provides a review of power factor and the resulting impacts on the electrical system. The section is presented as a series of questions and answers that a utility customer might ask when first confronted with the subject of power factor. There are also sections that summarize the fundamentals of power factor correction and provide power factor and power quality case studies.

This report provides utilities and their customers with guidelines for the design and application of power factor correction capacitors within customer facilities.
