Monitoring and Analysis of Power Quality Problems Associated with Distribution Capacitor Banks

The objective of this project was to develop an application guide that provides design, operation, simulation, and performance monitoring guidelines for assessing distribution capacitor banks and their effect on customer power quality. The guide presents specific power quality problems including capacitor bank switching transients and power system harmonics, methods for identifying these problems, and methods for determining their effect on utility and customer systems.
Utility capacitor banks are a key component for efficient distribution system design. Design considerations often include traditional power frequency issues such as voltage support, power factor correction, and released system capacity. However, future designs will also include power quality as a consideration as customer facilities continue the transition towards sensitive power electronic-based systems.
The guide includes an introductory section that provides a review of common power quality problems associated with distribution capacitor banks, including voltage magnification, nuisance tripping of sensitive electronic equipment, harmonic resonance, and harmonic distortion. There are also sections that include guidelines for designing utility distribution capacitor banks with respect to power quality, guidelines for monitoring and simulating power quality problems associated with distribution capacitor banks, and a number of representative case studies.
This report provides utility distribution engineers with a summary of the most significant power quality problems associated with the application of utility distribution capacitor banks.
