Title
Impact of Utility Voltage Variations on Customer Systems: An Application Guide
Abstract
The objective this project was to develop an application guide which provides a review of voltage variation phenomena that can negatively affect utility and customer power systems. The guide includes relevant standards-related information and representative waveforms for many of the common voltage variations that occur on the electric power system, including voltage sags during transmission and distribution system faults, momentary interruptions during circuit reclosing, undervoltages during induction motor starting, and voltage flicker during arc furnace operation.

This guide presents the complex subject of power system voltage variations using easily understandable terms, guidelines, and examples. In addition, present industry best practices for mitigating these voltage variations are presented.

The report includes an introductory section that provides guidelines for identifying and classifying voltage variation phenomena, a review of customer power quality problems associated with voltage variations, and a number of example voltage variation waveforms. There are also sections that summarize power conditioning alternatives for mitigating voltage variations, guidelines for monitoring and simulating power system voltage variations, and a number of representative case studies.

This report provides utility engineers with a summary of power system voltage variations and commonly applied methods for reducing their effect on utility and customer power systems.
