Feature Project

ELECTROMAGNETIC TRANSIENT PROGRAM (EMTP)
EMTP-RV is a specialized software for the simulation and analysis of transients in power systems.

The EMTP Development Coordination Group (DCG) was the result of over 20 years of extensive research funded by CEATI and its international partners.

Developed and maintained by the DCG, the EMTP-RV package includes a very intuitive GUI (graphical user interface), a completely reprogrammed computational engine and an advanced output processor. It features a wide variety of modeling capabilities for studying various phenomena ranging in duration from microseconds to seconds. Uses include switching and lightning surge analysis, insulation coordination, shaft torsional oscillations, ferroresonance and power electronics applications (microgrids, HVDC, VSC, etc.) in power systems.

Visit the EMTP-RV website to find out more.

  • COMPREHENSIVE RIVER ICE SIMULATION SYSTEM PROJECT (CRISSP)
CEATI International Inc. is currently finalizing the development of an ice simulation software program designed to enhance the capability of the hydroelectric power industry in dealing with problems brought about by ice conditions. The program will also provide quantitative predictions of these conditions for environmental and engineering analyses associated with the development and operation of other hydraulic engineering projects such as flood control and inland navigation structures.
  • RISK AND UNCERTAINTY IN DAM SAFETY
Risk assessment has the potential to radically improve the way dam safety enhancements are evaluated and prioritised. Dam Risk Assessment: A Guide is one of the most comprehensive treatments to date of how to apply the risk assessment process to the evaluation of dam safety.
  • STATIC ICE LOADS ON HYDROELECTRIC STRUCTURES
Although dams have been built and operated for many years in northern climates, the ice loads exerted on them are still not well understood. To better understand static ice loads on hydroelectric structures, a ten-year project was undertaken in which field programs were conducted at sites in Central and Eastern Canada from 1991-92 to 1999-2000
to measure these loads. The results of this research are available from CEATI in a special package comprising a Final Summary Report, an Ice Load Design Guide, and the specially-developed Ice Load Prediction Software.

  • ELECTROMAGNETIC TRANSIENT PROGRAM (EMTP)
EMTP-RV is a specialized software for the simulation and analysis of transients in power systems. CEATI International has been a sponsor of the EMTP development since 1982, and has acted as the project adminstrator for the EMTP Development Coordination Group.
  • CANADIAN POWER QUALITY SURVEY
Over 400 sites all across Canada were evaluated using the acclaimed Power Quality Measurement Protocol developed for CEATI in order to establish a rigorous and verified baseline of the electrical power quality level that Canadian electrical utilities would be able to supply to their customers in accordance with newly developed IEC and IEEE Standards. This report details the results of the Canadian Distribution Power Quality Survey (1999-2000). The power quality baseline that this survey established has been recognized by the electricity industry as a prerequisite for utilities. It represents the minimum ‘Bronze’ level of quality that will define future ‘Silver’ and ‘Gold’ standards.
  • CABLE AMPACITY PROGRAM (CYMCAP)
CYMCAP is a windows-based software package designed to simulate the thermal behavior of power cable installations. This software was developed under a CEATI International research project in collaboration with CYME International, a world leader in electric power engineering software, Ontario Hydro and McMaster University. The well-known superior analytical capabilities of the package, coupled with an intuitive and powerful Graphical User Interface, efficient data base management and extensive graphical reporting facilities, make CYMCAP an indispensable tool for demanding engineering analysis.
  • THE FINITE ELEMENTS THERMAL ANALYSIS SOFTWARE PACKAGE (FETA)
The FETA (Finite Elements Thermal Analysis) software package was developed to equip cable designers with the capability to analyze installation types. An original project of CEATI International, FETA has been marketed in the past by CYME International as a DOS-based program. Currently, the product is being further developed by CYME International to operate in Microsoft Windows.
  • ON-LINE PARTIAL DISCHARGE MONITORING INSTRUMENTATION
Over 20 years of extensive research, funded by CEATI International, Iris Power Engineering (Ontario, Canada), and Ontario Power Generation, refined partial discharge technologies that can be used to detect most motor and generator stator winding problems during normal service have been developed. This CEATI partial discharge test technology has won worldwide acceptance with all major utilities.
  • WILDLIFE TRACKING SYSTEM
The Lotek GPS_1000 Monitoring System, designed by CEATI and Lotek Engineering, was introduced to the wildlife research community in 1994. Since that time, its accuracy and powerful attributes have assisted biologists worldwide in better identifying movement and activity patterns of large mammals, from North American caribou to African elephants. The detailed positional information provided by these Global Positioning System collars has proved invaluable in helping researchers make informed decisions regarding wildlife management issues.
  • INTERNAL FAULT DETECTOR (IFD)
Due to normal degradation of insulating properties in transformers, and especially during lightning or ice storms, transformers fail internally. Over the years manufacturers have improved their technology to protect against high current faults, however this makes detection of initial low current faults and restoration of service very difficult for line crews working under pressure and often in adverse conditions. CEATI International, in collaboration with IFD Corporation, the National Research Council (NRC), and power utilities, have developed a highly reliable and inexpensive sensor for detection of internal faults.

Publications

Over more than 25 years of work, CEATI has successfully completed and published over 1,300 projects worth over $350M. Today, knowledge earned by CEATI through years of experience in the electric industry is available on print. The CEATI guides, manuals and reports represent a wealth of field-proven information on a wide range of technical issues and practices. Some of CEATI publications (see examples below) represent significant contribution to the electric industry worldwide, internationally recognized as state-of-the-art work:
