Event Overview
This conference will explore the best available information about the impact of innovative technologies on the operation and maintenance of utility transmission and distribution assets. The emergence of interconnected information and control systems demands new technologies for integrated system monitoring and testing. The focus will be on the application of these technologies, particularly to overhead line maintenance and operations. The discussion will range from state of the art research to firsthand accounts of the benefits of using these new technologies in the utility setting.
Themes:
- Condition Assessment
- New Inspection & Maintenance Techniques
- Information Management
- Maintenance Prioritization
- Reliability and Resiliency of T&D Assets
Online Platform
The Transmission & Distribution Conference will be hosted online and mirror our in-person event with seamless transitions between activities, including:
- The main stage, with technical presentations
- Breakout rooms for interactive sessions
- Event-wide and room-based live chat with presenters and other attendees
- Impromptu one-on-one video calls with other attendees
- Side discussions with up to four other attendees
- Exhibition booths
We have selected Hopin (hopin.com) as our browser-based platform. Attendees will be invited and required to set up a free Hopin account to complete their registration for this event.
Hopin system requirements:
- Minimum Internet speeds of 5mbps for download and 2mbps for upload are recommended
- Use of Chrome or Firefox is recommended – make sure your browser is up-to-date
- Webcam and microphone (to participate in breakout sessions and one-on-one video calls)
- Disabling use of any VPN, as VPNs can cause internet instability and negatively impact user experience
Attendance
This conference is an industry open event, with registration available to:
- Transmission and Distribution Managers and Supervisors
- Transmission and Distribution Engineers and Engineering Supervisors
- Consultants, Service Providers, and Contractors
- Consultants and Contractors from Other Industries with Examples of and Experience with the Application of These Themes
- Equipment Manufacturers and Vendors
- Research Facilities and Laboratory Personnel

Call for Abstracts
We are pleased to announce a call for abstracts for the Transmission & Distribution Conference: Technology Innovation for Operations and Maintenance Activities. Experts are invited to submit presentation abstracts on one of the five themes described below.
IMPORTANT – Abstracts are due by 4:00pm ET on April 15, 2021. A notification of acceptance will be provided no later than May 13, 2021. Abstracts shall be evaluated based on their applicability to the subject matter and their technical merits. Proponents are encouraged to emphasize work conducted for electric utility clients.
Themes:
- Condition Assessment
- New Inspection & Maintenance Techniques
- Information Management
- Maintenance Prioritization
- Reliability and Resiliency of T&D Assets
Areas of interest for transmission systems include:
- Introduction of new devices to increase network services and utilization, as well as to validate highly distributed renewable generation integrated systems at different scales
- Digital simulation of physical assets to support engineering and operational systems
- Tools and data to enable informed decision-making and reduce risks on key issues that influence the future of the electric power sector
- Integrated information sources to reduce data related costs while improving consistency, reliability, and safety, as well as enabling regulators to understand the implications of requirements for renewable resources installed behind the meter
- Standards and protocols for interoperability and testing underpinning network modernization activities
Areas of interest for distribution systems include:
- High efficiency energy storage devices to improve the stability and reliability of distribution grids on very long rural feeders or feeders with high DER penetration
- The role of AI in continuous condition assessment of infrastructure assets – machine reading of smart metering data or machine reading of satellite imagery to trigger condition-based maintenance
- Role of solid-state electronics for grid volt-VAR optimization
- Self-configuring distribution grids based on fault location information, connectivity, and switch status remote control
- Development status of smart solid-state transformers and circuit breakers for use on distribution systems
