Event Overview
Event Registration – March 7, 2-5pm and March 8, 8am-12pm
Building on the success of past industry-open events the 2016 CEATI Event will bring electrical professionals from the areas of hydropower and transmission under the same roof at the Hyatt Regency in beautiful Indian Wells, CA.
Comprised of three co-located industry tracks, hydro, cables, and stations will provide an open forum for information exchange with a focus on technical presentations and experiences for the benefit of the electricity industry.
Hydropower Track
Supported by over 70 hydro utilities from around the world, CEATI International’s Hydraulic Plant Life and Dam Safety Interest Groups will collaborate once again to produce the hydro industry’s premier utility and dam owner focused gathering.
Owning and operating hydropower projects requires the best available knowledge to improve reliability, reduce outage timing and cost, recognize potential failure modes and understand the associated risks and consequences. It is imperative that dam and hydro plant owners, regulators and consulting engineers maintain and advance their expertise and knowledge of critical equipment. Due to the aging workforce and retirement of experienced personnel, today’s hydropower professionals are left with fewer opportunities to gain experience.
CEATI’s 2016 hydropower conference will bring together hydro experts to discuss key challenges facing the industry; strategies for the life extension of hydro assets and continued performance of dams and powerplants for the near, medium and long term.
The conference will offer hydro professionals a unique opportunity to deliberate on both short and long term reliability issues, keeping projects operational, remediation and rehabilitation as well as succession planning and training strategies. Focus will be on the optimum and efficient operation of hydro facilities to meet the needs of all stakeholders while considering the needs and protection of the public and the environment.
The program will include case studies, best practices, lessons learned, and panel discussions, and will identify knowledge gaps to be addressed.

Stations Track
As the electrical industry is undergoing fundamental change in reduced load growth, changing load patterns, expanding distributed generation, new emerging technologies and competing demands, CEATI’s Life Cycle Management of Station Equipment & Apparatus (LCMSEA) participants have identified a need to further discuss the topics related to strategies of maintaining, planning and development for future stations.
Participants are interested in technological advances in station apparatus, construction and maintenance techniques, as well as the changing requirements of stakeholders, regulators, and customers associated with this equipment. Methods and tools for gathering necessary data and analytic processes to assess performance, maintain reliability, plan for and develop future utility stations are being discussed, as well as prevention, planning and control of catastrophic events, to mitigate their effects and respect social responsibility.
The Stations interest group is intended to promote and facilitate communication and coordination surrounding development and implementation topics associated with optimizing life cycle costs related to electrical utility station equipment and apparatus. The conference will provide an open forum for Information exchange and deliberation, with a particular focus on technical presentations, case studies, and the sharing of ideas and experiences for the benefit of the industry.
Topics include:
Strategic Planning for Development of Stations of the Future
- Futuristic View
- Planning and Maintainability
- Safety & Environments
- Reliability / Customer / DG Connections
- New Technology, Devices, Construction Techniques and Innovations for Stations
- Security
- Regulatory
Cables Track
Continuing to build on the success of past cables workshops, CEATI International’s 2016 event will focus on sharing information on best practices and emerging issues for advanced diagnostic techniques as well as mitigation techniques for corrosion and oil leaks to maximize service life and minimize life cycle costs for transmission underground cable systems.
Recognizing that clear communication and collaboration are crucial when managing high-voltage underground systems, the event aims to bring in multiple perspectives from across the industry. Presentations will draw from the expertise and experience of electric utilities, cable and accessory manufacturers, underground cable/pipeline corrosion experts and thought leaders in the field of engineering work practices. Supported by CEATI’s Transmission Underground Cables Interest Group (TUCIG), the event will address and explore the latest developments in tools and techniques to improve the design, maintenance operation and management of transmission underground cable systems.
This conference will also provide information on transmission cable diagnostic tests and condition assessment techniques. Utility experience in the interpretation of test results and implementation of remedial measures will be discussed, covering HPFF, SCFF and XLPE cable systems. Attendees will learn the applications of proactive testing and condition monitoring for cables and accessories. The conference will cover well established along with new diagnostic techniques being introduced to the industry. Presentations will draw from the expertise and experience of electric utilities, cable manufacturers and testing equipment vendors.
