Event Overview
This conference will explore practical, cost-effective approaches and methodologies that utilities can employ to reduce operating expenses in both the short and the long term, while preserving reliability performance and customer satisfaction and without unduly increasing potential liability. The focus will be on reducing the cost or increasing the value of inspections and preventative maintenance activities for overhead transmission assets as well as overhead and underground distribution assets. The conference will also address how to decrease technical losses. Presentations will be given by industry experts and leading utilities, providing practical methodologies that utilities will be able to implement both now and in the future to improve their inspection and preventative maintenance activities, reduce their operational costs or increase their value.
Themes:
- Getting the best value for your T&D Inspection and Maintenance Activities Today
- Getting the best value for your T&D Inspection and Maintenance Activities in the Future
Strategies and Methodologies for Driving T&D Line Efficiencies
We are pleased to announce a Call for Abstracts for the CEATI 2019 T&D Conference. Experts are invited to submit presentation abstracts on one of the three themes described below.
IMPORTANT – Abstracts are due by 4:00pm ET, March 26, 2019. A notification of acceptance will be provided no later than April 22, 2019. Abstracts shall be evaluated based on their applicability to the subject matter and their technical merits. Proponents are encouraged to emphasize work conducted for their electric utility clients. (Approx. 300 words)
The following specific session titles were the preferred topics identified by the Transmission Line Asset Management (TLAM) and Distribution Line Asset Management (DLAM) program members.
SESSION 1: Common Practices for Getting the Best Value for Present Transmission & Distribution Facilities Inspection Activities
Description of Session for Abstracts
This session addresses overhead transmission systems and overhead and underground distribution systems.
Traditional periodic inspections performed by trained personnel are the preferred method for ensuring that assets maintain an appropriate working condition. However, having trained personnel physically inspect all the assets on a regular basis can be expensive.
This session focuses on practical strategies and methodologies that utilities currently employ to ensure that they establish the optimum balance between benefits and costs of T&D asset inspections when considering expenses, customer reliability, and safety. Presentations should describe case studies of utilities that have successfully reduced or plan to reduce inspection costs or increase benefits through changes in people, process, technology, or a combination of all/some factors.
SESSION 2: Common Practices for Getting the Best Value from your Present Transmission & Distribution Facilities Preventative Maintenance Activities
Description of Sessions for Abstracts
This session addresses overhead transmission systems and overhead and underground distribution systems.
Preventative maintenance activities performed on T&D assets can extend their life and ensure their continued value. Traditional preventative maintenance activities are time based or follow the reliability centered maintenance approach. While these approaches have stood the test of time, they can be costly for utilities.
This session focuses on practical way that utilities can reduce the costs or increase the benefits of preventative maintenance without significantly impacting customer reliability, worker safety, or public safety. Presentations in this session will describe case studies of utilities that have successfully reduced costs or increased the benefits associated with preventative maintenance activities through changes in people, process, technology, or a combination of all/some factors.
SESSION 3: New Approaches and Technologies for Improving Future Transmission & Distribution Facility Inspections
Description of Session for Abstracts
This session addresses overhead transmission systems and overhead and underground distribution systems.
Session 1 and 2 focus on what utilities are doing now and in the near future to reduce costs or increase benefits associated with facilities inspections. This session focuses on strategies that utilities could employ to improve inspection activities longer term (i.e. 5 – 10 years). Presentations will describe case studies of utilities that are planning to implement longer term strategies to improve inspection activities through changes in people, process, technology, or a combination of all/some factors.
SESSION 4: New Approaches and Technologies for Improving Future Transmission & Distribution Facility Preventative Maintenance Activities
Description of Session for Abstracts
This session addresses overhead transmission systems and overhead and underground distribution systems.
Session 1 and 2 focus on what utilities are doing now and in the near future to reduce costs or increase benefits associated with facilities inspections. This session focuses on strategies that utilities could employ to improve preventative maintenance activities long term (i.e. 5 – 10 years). Presentations will describe case studies of utilities that are planning to implement long term strategies to improve preventative maintenance activities through changes in people, process, technology, or a combination of all/some factors.
SESSION 5: Strategies and Approaches for Reducing Technical Losses in Transmission Overhead Systems & Distribution Overhead and Underground Systems
Description of Session for Abstracts
Technical losses are the energy losses experienced by the power system through its normal operation. They include line losses and transformer losses and can account for as much as 5% on a typical system. Most utilities consider the costs of technical losses to be an operational expense.
The modernized grid allows for a more accurate accounting of the technical losses than was the case in the past. With this additional information, utilities can target problem areas and reduce the technical losses and improve the bottom line.
Presentations will focus on new technology and approaches that could be used by utilities to reduce technical losses in the transmission overhead system network and the distribution system grid.
