For a thermal power station to operate an efficient closed cycle, the condensing plant, the cooling water system, and associated pumps must extract the maximum quantity of heat from the LP turbine exhaust steam to provide the lowest economic heat rejection for that steam cycle. The system must also convert the exhaust steam back to water for reuse and collect re-useable heat from the drains of the turbine, the feed heaters, and other auxiliaries. Clearly the steam condenser plays an extremely important role in the efficient operation of the station.
