The impact of variable energy resources, such as wind and solar, on power system operations can be mitigated through the use of energy storage. The general purpose of this guide is to provide insights into the role of energy storage as currently deployed, and highlight potential applications to mitigate the impact of renewable energy integration on various levels of the power system including the transmission, distribution, behind-the-meter and remote sites. This report is an aggregate of a thorough literature review, in-house expertise, and a survey of utilities. The content of the report includes detailed explanations of renewable energy integration impacts, various energy storage technologies, the application of those technologies with respect to variable energy resource integration, as well as lists of references, standards, existing research and development projects, and recommendations for future energy storage demonstration projects.
