This report intends to provide sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) users with guidance related to mitigating, minimizing, and reducing SF6 emissions. Prepared with electrical utility operators and SF6 equipment manufacturers in mind, this document should be useful to all parties involved with other applications that employ SF6.
Included in this report is a brief introduction to common aspects of the use, alternatives, handling, and safety of SF6. The introduction is followed by a survey that was distributed to electrical utilities probing their methods for handling and using SF6 in their equipment. One section of the survey asked questions related to the amount of gas that was currently in use, steps being taken in the event that a gas leak is detected, how leaks are investigated/repaired, and which environmental regulations are being adhered to. The remaining sections of the document include information regarding current regulatory policies from Canada, the United States, and Europe, followed by state-of-the-art standards used in equipment fabrication and maintenance, as well as SF6 leak detection and sensing. The report concludes with recommendations for best practices that should be considered based on the survey results and literature search.
