The lifespan of dampers and spacer dampers is impossible to predict precisely due to the variables involved; the prediction of the lifespan of the elastomers commonly used in spacer dampers is especially difficult. In response to asset managers’ desire to anticipate lifespans for dampers and spacer dampers, this report suggests the use of CIGRE design recommendations as the basis for identifying those locations and installations where Aeolian vibration problems may be encountered. The lifespan of elastomeric components is also discussed and suggestions are made regarding when to expect elastomer-related problems. Some gaps in knowledge are also identified, forming the basis for future research opportunities.
