An application guide was commissioned by member utilities interested in practices for implementing real-time thermal ratings on underground transmission cables, consisting of extruded, self-contained fluid-filled and pipe-type systems. This report summarizes the results of an industry survey of TUCIG members and non-utility members, and describes the characteristics, application considerations, and summary of suppliers of these systems. The results show that real-time thermal ratings have been applied for many utilities. However, it is important to understand the utility’s responsibilities when implementing these systems since only a portion of the work may be done by outside contractors due to utility know-how and security.
