The objectives of this project are:
1) Develop a comprehensive understanding of the challenges of inertia-less and variable output renewable generation on grid frequency regulation, protection and control
2) Examine in detail the capabilities of novel technologies to provide “synthetic inertia” from wind and solar farms which can offset the negative impact of loss of rotating inertia.
3) Investigate the new protection needs and control coordination issues with implementation of synthetic inertia from wind farms, solar farms and energy storage systems
4) Discuss emerging protection and control issues with such intermittent generators, caused by implementation of smart inverter functions both in grid connected and microgrid environments
