This report reviews energy storage (ES) technologies and assesses them based on several technical metrics. Potential applications of the technologies in distribution system are identified, categorized, and discussed. Real-world examples of utility-scale ES deployment use cases and experiences are presented. In addition, two case studies on key energy storage applications in distribution systems are conducted and technical parameters are determined. This report will help utility engineers gain a solid understanding of available energy storage technologies, as well as their technical parameters and application characteristics. It will enable them to make informed decisions when evaluating and applying these technologies. This report further serves as a market watch for significant emerging technologies.
