This report presents the results and recommendations of a recently completed study that is focused on identifying the most effective combinations of buildings passive strategies and active technologies that are appropriate to the ASHRAE climate zones of 5 and 7, which would result in significantly reduced building energy use and carbon emissions while providing enhanced indoor environmental conditions. The study was focused on four most representative building types: MURBs, high-rise office, K-12 school, and retail in comparison to the corresponding standard building performance. The results outline the fundamental considerations, opportunities, and limitations associated with identifying optimal low-exergy climate-adapted building design solutions for each of the four building types in the two climates.
