This study has investigated and further developed strain-gauge based monitoring systems for fossil fired generating stations. It has been determined that such systems, particularly those based upon capacitance strain gauges, can be very useful and cost-effective in assessing the safety of critical plant components and in increasing their availability. Significant improvements in their future applicability for transient and long-term measurements and monitoring have been made in this study.
