Don Ans
Asset Management in Generation

Don Ans received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1985 and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Athabasca University in 2012. He has over 34 years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and asset management of hydroelectric generating stations. During his tenure with Manitoba Hydro, Mr. Ans was responsible for carrying out and managing maintenance engineering, reliability, and commissioning functions at all of the utility’s facilities, as well as leading the corporate enterprise asset management project.

It emphasizes continuous training and development for asset management professionals. It includes case studies on the value of asset management to utilities, trainings on asset management strategies and planning, as well as utility member examples of strategic asset management plans (SAMPs), asset management policies (AMPs) and asset hierarchies.
RESEARCH REPORT
Whole Life Cost Models for Generation Assets
This project aims to develop whole life cost (WLC) models for specified generation asset types, based on the CEATI WLC template, definitions, and methodology. The goal of the report is to help asset management professionals evaluate the effect of asset investments on the asset life cycle and to assist in evaluating future investments in the asset.
GUIDANCE DOCUMENT
Generation Guideline for Risk Management
This report presents a risk management framework tailored to generation assets to support core asset management activities and lead to a more thorough understanding of infrastructure and the decisions that are involved in its management. The investigators developed the framework based on ISO 60812 failure modes and effects analysis process, synthesizing elements from the applicable standards. The investigators also developed an Excel spreadsheet for applying the framework and populating asset content.
WORKING GROUP
Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) Working Group
The purpose of this working group is to help members learn about how to use the CMMS to achieve asset management objectives. Additionally, the group explores challenges with the CMMS and how are they being resolved. Topics addressed by the working group include: life cycle cost information from the CMMS (financial vs. physical assets), general implementation of the CMMS, using/analyzing data, asset and work details, risk, and mobile functionality.
BENCHMARKING TOOL
Asset Management Utility Benchmarking Survey
The survey focuses on a utility’s asset management maturity and internal asset management function composition. Results allow your organization to benchmark its asset management program against other utilities and ultimately help build the business case for investments and changes in your asset management program based on the latest industry trends and best practices.
